James 1:2-4 (ESV)
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
The trials that James refers to here are the outward trials of life that we face. We may be tested to stand up for what is right. We may be ridiculed for voicing the truth. When we face these outward trials and overcome them our ability to stand again increases -- it increases our steadfastness. Each and every test we face helps us to face another challenge.
